The Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL), Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), in collaboration with the Competere Foundation for Trade and Competition Policy, organised a discussion on “India’s Reform Trajectory, Market Distortions and the Next Frontier for Growth and Competitiveness” on 29 July 2026 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The event marked the launch of a report by the Competere Foundation assessing India’s performance under its Market Distortions Performance Index. Covering the period from 2010 to 2023, the report highlighted India’s advancement by 25 places in the global rankings, from 82nd to 57th, and examined key structural reforms, including GST, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, regulatory reforms and trade facilitation measures. The programme commenced with welcome remarks by Dr James J. Nedumpara, Professor and Head, CTIL, followed by a keynote address by Shri Sudhanshu Pandey, State Election Commissioner of UT Ladakh and Former Secretary, Government of India. Mr Shanker Singham, Chairman and President, Competere Foundation for Trade and Competition Policy, presented the report and its key findings. The presentation was followed by a panel discussion featuring Mr Parthsarathi Jha, Partner, Economic Laws Practice; Dr Danish A. Hashim, Head - Ease of Doing Business & MNCs, Confederation of Indian Industry; Prof. (Dr.) Shilpi Bhattacharya, Professor, Jindal Global Law School, O.P. Jindal Global University; and Mr Shanker Singham. The discussion examined India’s structural reform journey and policy priorities relating to domestic competition, investment conditions, dispute resolution, regulatory reforms, international market access and external regulatory barriers. The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, bringing together representatives from the legal, academic, industry and policy communities to deliberate on measures for further strengthening India’s competitiveness, productivity and integration with the global economy.
