International Conference on the Role of International Trade in Global Energy Transition

16-17 Janurary 2026 9AM
Odisha
The National Law University Orissa (NLUO), through its Centre for International Trade Law (CITL), in collaboration with the Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL) and the WTO Chairs Programme (WCP), successfully hosted the International Conference on the Role of International Trade in Global Energy Transition on 16-17 January 2026 at the NLUO campus in Cuttack, Odisha. The two-day conference brought together academicians, policymakers, legal experts, trade professionals, and representatives from the energy sector to deliberate on the evolving nexus between international trade and sustainable energy transition. Against the backdrop of the global shift towards cleaner energy systems, the conference examined how international trade can function as a catalyst for a just, inclusive, and resilient global energy future. The discussions engaged with critical themes, including the impact of trade on energy consumption and conservation, foreign investment in renewable energy, the compatibility of international energy treaties with WTO obligations, and the role of WTO mechanisms-such as the Trade Policy Review Mechanism and Aid for Trade-in advancing clean energy objectives. Sessions also analysed key WTO disputes, including India - Solar Cells, Canada - Feed-in Tariff, and US - Reformulated Gasoline, to assess the interface between multilateral trade rules, national energy policies, and sustainable industrial development. The conference featured presentations of original research papers from legal, economic, and policy perspectives, fostering rigorous academic exchange and cross-sectoral dialogue. Each presentation was followed by focused discussions, contributing to a deeper understanding of the role of international trade law in shaping global energy transition pathways.
