15-16 Ocotober 2025 10 AM
NEW DELHI
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in collaboration with amfori – Trade with Purpose, and the Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL), hosted a high-level two-day conference on trade and sustainability in New Delhi, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, EU delegates, academic institutions, and other stakeholders. As part of the conference, CTIL organised a panel discussion titled “Beyond Tariffs: Advancing Sustainability into Free Trade Agreements”, which focused on the growing integration of sustainability in modern FTAs, addressing climate change commitments, green trade facilitation, responsible supply chains, and the challenges and implications for developing countries. The session was moderated by Prof. (Dr.) James J. Nedumpara, Professor and Head of CTIL and India Chair of the WTO Chairs Programme, with panelists including Mr. Abhishek Acharya, Director at the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of India; Mr. Stuart Newman, Senior Advocacy & Engagement Advisor at amfori – Trade with Purpose; Mr. Petros Sourmelis, Head of Trade and Economic Section at the European Union Delegation to India; Ms. Shiny Pradeep, Assistant Professor at CTIL; as well as Prof. (Dr.) James J. Nedumpara and Mr. Sumanta Chaudhuri. The session began with a presentation by Ms. Priyansha Hajela and Ms. Shana Sharma, Associates at CTIL, which traced the evolution of sustainability provisions in India’s FTAs and elaborated on the trade and sustainable development chapters in the India–EFTA TEPA and India–UK CETA agreements. The panel highlighted key strategies for incorporating sustainability into trade discussions, including technology transfer, stronger implementation mechanisms, provision of transition periods, and deeper collaboration between stakeholders, facilitating meaningful and constructive discussions on the way forward for sustainable trade practices
